Hey there! If you’re starting to plan a 30A trip, here’s the honest truth: most of these vacations go right or wrong before anyone packs a single swimsuit. The week you pick, the airport you fly into and which end of the road you stay on decide how much of your trip you spend in the car, and how much you spend with your toes in the sand. This is the planning post I’d hand a friend. What each town is like, when to come, how to get here and how to get around once you arrive.
First, a quick lay of the land. Scenic Highway 30A runs about 19 miles along the Gulf in South Walton County, Florida. It splits off US 98 in Dune Allen and meets back up with it at the east end, just past Rosemary Beach. Everything below sits on or just off that stretch.

The 30A Towns, West to East
Every community along 30A has its own personality, and it’s worth getting to know them before you pick a base. For more on each one, see our Towns posts.
Dune Allen and Gulf Place. The quiet western end. The bike path starts here, right next to Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, and Gulf Place has a little cluster of shops and restaurants at the corner of 30A and County Road 393.
Blue Mountain Beach. It’s named for the blue lupine that once covered its dunes, and it sits on the highest ground in South Walton. It’s residential and calm, with Blue Mountain Bakery and a creamery for stops along the way (and yes, ice cream absolutely counts as a stop).
Grayton Beach. Laid-back and unpolished in the best way, with The Red Bar in the village and a big state park with a dune lake right behind the beach. It’s my pick for a home base, and it’s where our family’s house is.
WaterColor. Just past Western Lake, the largest of South Walton’s dune lakes. You can rent a kayak or paddleboard at The Boat House and get out on the lake yourself.
Seaside. Yes, the pastel town from The Truman Show! Central Square and the Airstream Row food trucks make it the natural midday stop, especially with hungry kids in tow.
Seagrove. Older and more relaxed than its neighbors, with family-run businesses like Old Florida Fish House.
WaterSound and Seacrest. WaterSound, one of the newer neighborhoods, sits just past Deer Lake State Park, which is where I’d send you for a quiet beach day. Seacrest, a long-established community, comes after Camp Creek Lake.
Alys Beach. White, Caribbean-influenced architecture and a stately line of palms along 30A. Come for the architecture, then stay for dinner at George’s.
Rosemary Beach and Inlet Beach. Rosemary has cobblestone paths and New Orleans-style buildings around a walkable town center. Inlet Beach, at the very eastern end, has the county’s largest public beach access. That matters more than you’d think, because Rosemary’s own beach is for residents and guests. More on that in our guide to the best beaches on 30A.

When to Go
So, when should you come? Honestly, every season works here. They just suit different trips. (For the full month-by-month version, see our guide to when to visit 30A.) The water temperatures below are NOAA’s long-term monthly averages for Panama City Beach, the closest NOAA gauge with a full record.
Winter (December to February)
The water averages about 60 to 63°F, so this is a walking-and-eating season, not a swimming one. January is traditionally the quietest month, and some restaurants close for a few weeks to remodel. If you’re coming in January, check hours before you plan a dinner around one particular spot.
The big exception is Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, when the 30A Songwriters Festival fills about 30 venues with more than 160 songwriters. 160! The 2027 festival runs January 15 to 18, with Friday headliners at the Seaside Amphitheater. If you’re coming for it, buy passes and book lodging as soon as you’ve decided.
Spring (March to May)
The Gulf warms from about 65°F in March to 77°F in May. March brings spring breakers, though South Walton is calmer than most spring break destinations. Spring is also festival season, from the Seaside School Half Marathon (February or March) to Art Month in May. One planning note I don’t want you to miss: Alys Beach’s Digital Graffiti projection festival moves to every other year after 2026, so there’s no 2027 edition. It returns in 2028.
Memorial Day weekend is the real start of the summer season.
Summer (June to August)
This is the warmest water of the year, around 82 to 86°F, and the busiest beaches. August is hot, with frequent afternoon showers. I’ll be honest, that heat takes some planning when you have little ones, so think beach in the morning and pool or naps in the afternoon. Summer is also when the beach tram runs its fullest schedule and when parking is hardest to find. In recent summers, Walton County Tourism has covered day-use entry to Grayton Beach and Topsail Hill state parks from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
Fall (September to November)
If you ask me, this is the sweet spot. The water stays warm into fall, averaging about 84°F in September and 78°F in October, and the crowds thin out after Labor Day. October brings WaterColor’s Harvest Wine Festival and Rosemary Beach Uncorked.
In November the water drops to about 70°F, and Seaside hosts the Seeing Red Wine Festival: four days of winemaker dinners, tastings and a Saturday Grand Tasting in Central Square. 2026 is its 34th year (November 5 to 8), and the festival itself describes it as a sell-out weekend where lodging fills quickly, so don’t wait on this one. On Thanksgiving Day, the 30A 10K kicks off the morning at Rosemary Beach.
Fall is also the back half of hurricane season. I’ll get to that below.

Getting There
Flying
Two commercial airports serve 30A, and the better one really depends on where you’re staying.
- Northwest Florida Beaches International (ECP), in Panama City Beach, is closest to the eastern half of 30A. Plan on about 30 to 40 minutes to Rosemary, Alys and Inlet Beach, and 50 to 70 minutes to Seaside. Delta, United, American and Southwest fly here.
- Destin-Fort Walton Beach (VPS) is the better pick for the western end, at about 50 to 70 minutes to Dune Allen and Gulf Place. It’s a longer haul to the east end, 75 to 100 minutes, and the route runs through Destin on US 98. Allegiant, American, Delta, United and Southwest fly here, and Allegiant adds seasonal nonstops from a long list of cities.
Those ranges come from the local guide 30A.com, so treat them as estimates. Summer Saturdays are the big turnover day for rentals, and US 98 through Destin and Miramar Beach can add another 30 to 45 minutes (not what anyone wants with a car full of tired travelers). If you’re staying in Grayton, Seaside or WaterColor, I’d book whichever airport has the better flight. The drive difference is small enough that schedule and fare should decide it.
Flying private? Destin Executive Airport (DTS) handles general aviation only.
Driving
South Walton is about 25 miles south of I-10. From Atlanta it’s roughly 315 miles, from Birmingham about 280, from New Orleans about 270 and from Dallas about 715. If you’re driving electric, Visit South Walton keeps a list of EV charging stations.
Either way, plan on having a car. Rideshare picks up at both airports, but you’ll want your own wheels for grocery runs, day trips and dinners in other towns.
Getting Around
Traffic and parking
I’ll be honest here: summer traffic and parking are the biggest complaints about 30A, and the county has been working on both. Paid parking now applies at three county lots, including the Grayton Beach Park and Ride ($5 an hour or $15 a day from March through October, $5 a day November through February). Grayton Beach State Park often fills up on busy days and closes temporarily, sometimes for hours, and pedestrians and cyclists have to wait too. If a state park beach is your plan, get there early. I really can’t say that enough.
For lot-by-lot details, this 30A beach parking guide lists where to park and what it costs.
The bike path
The Timpoochee Trail is a paved, mostly flat path of about 19 miles along 30A, from Dune Allen to Inlet Beach. It passes 12 beach neighborhoods, three state parks and a string of coastal dune lakes, and most beach accesses have bike racks. I’d think of it as transportation, not just exercise. Riding from Grayton to Seaside for dinner beats circling for a parking space every single time, and it’s exactly why our house keeps four bikes for guests. Otherwise, several shops along the trail rent bikes by the day or the week.
A few cautions. The path crosses 30A several times, it briefly shares the road on the Western Lake bridges, and driveways and business entrances cross it constantly. Kids should ride with an adult.

The free beach tram
Walton County runs free beach trams from two park-and-ride lots, and they’re the answer to the parking problem at the busiest accesses:
- From the Grayton Beach Park and Ride (1505 County Hwy 283 S): the Grayton Express runs to the Grayton village beach every 10 minutes from 6 a.m. to 9:45 p.m. A separate express goes straight to Grayton Beach State Park, and the Blue Mountain Local stops at Blue Mountain and Gulfview Heights.
- From the 393 Park and Ride (1668 S County Hwy 393): the Ed Walline Express runs every 10 minutes, and the Dune Allen Local stops at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, Dune Allen and Fort Panic.
Schedules change by season, so check beachparkandride.com before you go.
Stops and hours shift with the season, so check the free 30A beach tram schedule before you plan your day around it.

How Far Ahead to Book
This is the part people tend to leave too late, so here’s my cheat sheet:
- Summer, holiday weeks and festival weekends: book lodging as soon as you know your dates. MLK weekend (Songwriters Festival) and early November (Seeing Red) are the two weekends I’d lock in first.
- State park cabins and campsites: Grayton Beach State Park’s 30 cabins open for booking 11 months ahead for Florida residents and 10 months ahead for everyone else. New dates release daily at 8 a.m. Eastern. For summer or fall weekends, book the day your window opens.
- Festival tickets: Seeing Red packages and Songwriters Festival passes go on sale months in advance. Buy them before or alongside your lodging.
- Beach chairs in Seaside: the public can use Seaside’s Town Center beach only with a Cabana Man chair rental, and you can book online ahead of peak days.
- Dinner reservations: for peak weeks, I’d make them when you book the house, especially if you’re feeding a big group.
Hurricane Season, Honestly
Let’s talk about it. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. The National Hurricane Center puts the peak on September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. An average season brings 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes across the whole Atlantic basin, which includes the Gulf. Most of those storms never come near 30A, but some years one does.
I wouldn’t write off late summer or fall, because those are some of the best weeks of the year here. I would book them with a plan:
- Read the cancellation policy on your rental before you pay, especially what happens if a mandatory evacuation is ordered. Policies vary from owner to owner.
- Buy travel insurance early. According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, a policy bought after a storm is named typically won’t cover claims tied to that storm. Look at “cancel for any reason” coverage if you want more flexibility.
- Sign up for Alert Walton, the county’s emergency notification system, at alertwalton.org before you arrive.
- Respect the flags. Under double red flags, the water is closed to the public, and going in can bring a $500 fine. Text SAFETY to 31279 for current conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the closest airport to 30A?
It depends on which end you’re staying on. Northwest Florida Beaches International (ECP) in Panama City Beach is closest to the eastern half, about 30 to 40 minutes from Rosemary, Alys and Inlet Beach. Destin-Fort Walton Beach (VPS) is the better pick for the western end, and if you’re in Grayton, Seaside or WaterColor, I’d let the better flight decide.
How long is Scenic Highway 30A?
About 19 miles. It splits off US 98 in Dune Allen and runs along the Gulf through South Walton County, meeting back up with US 98 just past Rosemary Beach.
What is the best time of year to visit 30A?
If you ask me, fall is the sweet spot. The water averages about 84°F in September and 78°F in October, and the crowds thin out after Labor Day. Summer has the warmest water but the busiest beaches, and winter is better for walking and eating than swimming.
Is there a free shuttle on 30A?
Yes! Walton County runs free beach trams from two park-and-ride lots, the Grayton Beach Park and Ride and the 393 Park and Ride. The Grayton Express runs every 10 minutes from 6 a.m. to 9:45 p.m., but schedules change by season, so check beachparkandride.com before you go.
When is hurricane season on 30A?
The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and the National Hurricane Center puts the peak on September 10. I wouldn’t skip late summer or fall over it. Just read your rental’s cancellation policy and buy travel insurance before a storm is named.
