“When should we come?” is the first question friends ask me about 30A, and my honest answer is another question: what do you want the trip to be? If it’s swimming every day with the kids, that’s one set of months. If it’s long walks, a wine festival and a table at a restaurant you couldn’t get in July, that’s a completely different set.
So here’s the whole year, one month at a time, with the numbers that actually help you decide.
How to read the numbers. Air temperatures and rain come from NOAA’s 1991–2020 climate normals for the Destin Executive Airport station, about 20 miles west of the middle of 30A. Gulf temperatures are NOAA’s long-term monthly averages for Panama City Beach, just east of Inlet Beach. “Rain days” means days with at least a tenth of an inch. Event dates change every year, so treat the specific dates below as a head start and confirm them with the organizer before you book around one.

The Short Answer
- Warm water and the most going on: June through August. Also the busiest and most expensive stretch of the year.
- My pick for most families who can travel outside summer: May, and late September through October. The water is still swimmable, the beaches open up, and October is the driest month of the year.
- Quiet and easy on the budget: November through February. Walking and eating weather, not swimming weather.
What does “expensive” actually mean? Walton County’s own visitor studies give a useful picture. In winter 2025 (December through February), the average nightly rate across hotels and vacation rentals was about $196, with occupancy around 32%. In summer 2025 (June through August) it was about $500, with occupancy around 69%. Spring landed near $384 and fall near $336. One caveat: the summer and fall figures include cleaning and booking-platform fees after Airbnb and Vrbo changed how they quote prices in 2025, so they run a little high next to winter. The pattern is still clear. Summer costs roughly two and a half times what winter does.
January
Highs around 63°F, lows around 45°F. Gulf about 60°F. About 6 rain days.
January is traditionally the quietest month on 30A. Some restaurants close for a few weeks to remodel, so check hours before you plan a dinner around one place. Snowbirds settle in for longer stays from January into March.
The big exception is Martin Luther King Jr. weekend and the 30A Songwriters Festival, which runs January 15 to 18 in 2027 with more than 160 songwriters at 30 venues along 30A and Friday headliners at the Seaside Amphitheater. It is the one January weekend I’d book early.

February
Highs around 66°F, lows around 48°F. Gulf about 60°F. About 5 rain days.
February is busier than you’d guess. The SEASIDE SCHOOL Half Marathon + 5K fills Seaside from February 11 to 14 in 2027, with race day on Valentine’s Day itself. Alys Beach hosts the five-day 30A Wine Festival February 17 to 21, 2027. Eden Gardens State Park holds its Camellia Festival this month, too, and the Cultural Arts Alliance runs its Valentine Tour of Homes.
School-break note: many Atlanta-area districts are off the week of February 15, 2027, and Dallas ISD has Presidents Day off. Expect a bump in families that week.
March
Highs around 71°F, lows around 54°F. Gulf about 65°F. About 5 rain days.
Spring break month. Dallas ISD, for one, is off March 15 to 19, 2027, and spring-break weeks fill with families. The Gulf is still brisk for most swimmers, but the beach gets lively anyway.
Spring also flips a few practical switches. Lifeguards return to the county’s regional beach accesses on March 1. Paid-parking rates go up at the Grayton Beach Park and Ride in March, and Seaside restarts its paid parking each March. Wildflowers start showing up along the roadsides, and Eden Gardens’ camellias and azaleas peak around this time.
Rates and lots change from season to season, so check this 30A beach parking guide before you head out.

April
Highs around 76°F, lows around 60°F. Gulf about 70°F. About 4 rain days.
Atlanta-area spring break lands April 5 to 9, 2027, so that’s the busy week. Outside of it, April is one of the loveliest months here: comfortable afternoons, fewer rain days and a festival calendar that leans toward food and wine, including the Sandestin Wine Festival and the South Walton Beaches Wine & Food Festival at Grand Boulevard.
May
Highs around 84°F, lows around 68°F. Gulf about 77°F. About 4 rain days.
If you made me choose one month, I’d choose May. The water is finally warm enough for the kids to stay in all afternoon, it’s one of the drier months, and it’s the arts month: the ArtsQuest Fine Arts Festival is set for May 1 and 2, 2027, at Grand Boulevard. (Alys Beach’s Digital Graffiti now runs every other year, so there’s none in 2027; it returns in 2028.)
Sea turtle nesting season starts May 1 and runs through October 31. If your rental faces the beach, close the blinds at night and use red or amber light if you walk the sand after dark.
Memorial Day weekend is the real start of summer. Dallas ISD’s last day is May 26, 2027, and many Atlanta-area districts finish May 27, so the first weeks of June fill fast.
June
Highs around 89°F, lows around 74°F. Gulf about 82°F. About 6 rain days.
Summer is in full swing. Expect short afternoon showers, which are a perfect excuse for naps (or for something off our rainy day list). Hurricane season begins June 1 (more on that below). In recent summers, Walton County Tourism has covered day-use entry to Grayton Beach and Topsail Hill state parks from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and the free beach tram runs its fullest schedule. The Seaside Farmers Market adds a Tuesday market to its Saturday one in June and July.
July
Highs around 91°F, lows around 76°F. Gulf about 84°F. About 7 rain days.
Hot, busy and so fun with kids. Seaside’s Fourth of July in 2026 started with a 9 a.m. block party in Central Square, a children’s bike parade at 11, a Sinfonia Gulf Coast pops concert at 7 p.m. and fireworks at 8:30. Rosemary Beach holds its own parade, concert and fireworks on the Western Green, but in 2026 it was on July 2, so don’t assume it falls on the Fourth.
This is the month to book everything early. Walton County’s summer study found that more than 7 in 10 summer visitors plan at least three months ahead, and about 2 in 3 travel with children.
August
Highs around 91°F, lows around 76°F. Gulf about 86°F, the warmest of the year. About 8 rain days.
August is the wettest month, with frequent afternoon storms rolling in off the Gulf. It’s also when the crowds start to thin. Many Southern schools go back early: Atlanta-area districts started August 3, 2026, and Dallas ISD on August 11. Late August can be a sweet spot if your own kids start later. It’s also the front edge of peak hurricane season, so book with a plan (see below).
September
Highs around 88°F, lows around 72°F. Gulf about 84°F. About 5 rain days.
Labor Day weekend is summer’s last hurrah; Seaside marks it with a free evening concert at the amphitheater. After that, the beaches empty out while the water stays warm. September is also the statistical peak of hurricane season, which is the main reason it’s quieter.
October
Highs around 81°F, lows around 63°F. Gulf about 78°F. About 3 to 4 rain days, the fewest of the year.
October is the driest month, the water is still swimmable for most people, and the festival calendar is full: WaterColor’s Harvest Wine Festival, Rosemary Beach Uncorked (which tends to sell out), and Seaside’s Halloweener Derby, a dachshund race and dog costume contest (October 24 in 2026), followed by trick-or-treating around town on Halloween night.
One thing to plan around: county lifeguard coverage at the regional accesses ends October 31, so check the flags and swim near a guarded beach while you can.
November
Highs around 72°F, lows around 53°F. Gulf about 70°F. About 4 rain days.
November is a food-and-wine month. Seaside’s Seeing Red Wine Festival ran November 5 to 8 in 2026, its 34th year, and lodging nearby fills quickly. Alys Beach hosts Alys Beach Crafted, and on Thanksgiving morning the 30A 10K starts at Rosemary Beach. The Saturday after Thanksgiving, Seaside’s Holiday Parade and Turn on the Town kicks off the season (November 28 in 2026). Thanksgiving week, November 23 to 27, is a school holiday in both Dallas ISD and the big Atlanta-area districts.
Parking gets cheaper, too: the Grayton Beach Park and Ride drops to $5 a day from November through February.
December
Highs around 66°F, lows around 48°F. Gulf about 63°F. About 6 rain days.
December is quiet, cozy and very pretty. Eden Gardens State Park holds a Christmas Candlelight Tour, Rosemary Beach’s Holiday Tour of Homes is set for December 5, 2026, and Seaside, Rosemary Beach and Baytowne Wharf all ring in New Year’s Eve with fireworks. Winter break for Dallas ISD and most Atlanta-area schools runs December 21 to January 4.
Hurricane Season, Briefly
The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, peaking around September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. I’ll be honest here: those are also some of the most beautiful, least crowded weeks of the year, and I wouldn’t rule them out. Just book them with a plan. Read your rental’s cancellation policy, buy travel insurance early (a policy bought after a storm is named typically won’t cover that storm), and sign up for Alert Walton before you arrive. Our 30A trip planning guide goes deeper on all three.
So, When Should You Come?
Pick the trip first, then the month. Swimming every day? June through early September, or May if you want it a little calmer. A festival weekend? January, February, October or November. The best value? December through February, when average rates run well under half of summer’s.
Whenever you land, our best beaches on 30A guide and things to do on 30A will help you fill the days, and where to stay on 30A covers the towns.
